Are You Fulfilled?
Edition 44

💭 Welcome to Thoughtful Threads:
This week, we delve into the essence of fulfillment and the pursuit of happiness in the present moment.
📰 Agenda for this week's newsletter:
Introduction to understanding true fulfillment
A deep dive into the nature of happiness and the missteps in our pursuit of it
Engaging questions to help you reflect on your own sources of happiness
💡Topic Introduction:
Is what you're chasing truly making you happy? Let’s explore the depths of fulfillment beyond societal expectations.
🔎 Deep Dive into the Topic:
Fulfillment often gets conflated with achieving externally validated milestones, yet true contentment is about being at peace in the present moment. The psychological concept of "hedonic adaptation" tells us that people quickly return to a relatively stable level of happiness despite major positive or negative events or life changes. This suggests that neither the high of achievement nor the despair of failure determines our long-term happiness.
⌛ Historical Perspective: Ancient philosophers like Epicurus and Seneca argued that true happiness stems not from external achievements but from living a life of virtue and inner peace. Today, we can take a leaf out of their books by focusing on what brings us intrinsic satisfaction rather than societal applause.
✨ Engagement:
What are you currently pursuing that you believe will make you happy? Have you explored why you want it?
When was the last time you felt truly fulfilled? What were you doing, and why did it feel so rewarding?
How might your life change if you focused more on activities that align with your personal values rather than external expectations?
❓On a scale from 1 to 10, how fulfilled do you feel in your life right now, and why?
Here's how to interpret the range of answers:
1-3: Low Fulfillment
Definition/Explanation: Individuals scoring in this range often feel a significant lack of satisfaction and purpose in their daily lives. They might be experiencing challenges that overshadow their ability to appreciate life's joys, or they might feel disconnected from their personal goals and values. This can stem from various factors, including career dissatisfaction, personal setbacks, or unfulfilled expectations.
4-6: Moderate Fulfillment
Definition/Explanation: Those who score in the middle range might experience occasional satisfaction but generally feel that something is missing or that their potential isn't fully realized. They could be in transition, grappling with life’s complexities, or unsure how to align their actions with their deeper desires. There's an awareness of what could bring more happiness but uncertainty or hesitation about how to reach it.
7-9: High Fulfillment
Definition/Explanation: Individuals in this range usually feel that they are on the right path and experience regular moments of joy and contentment. They likely have a strong sense of purpose and feel that their daily activities contribute to their long-term goals. However, they may still see room for growth or areas of their life that could bring more satisfaction.
10: Completely Fulfilled
Definition/Explanation: This score indicates a deep, consistent sense of fulfillment and happiness. People at this level feel fully aligned with their values and are engaged in activities that bring them a profound sense of joy and satisfaction. It's rare to feel this way continuously, as life tends to fluctuate, but those who do typically have cultivated a lifestyle deeply integrated with their passions and principles.
In Pursuit of Happiness
We chase the horizon, ever wide,
Believing in the joy of the distant tide.
But happiness, elusive, slips away,
As tomorrow’s promise fades into today.
Amidst the rush for what might be,
The heart whispers softly to just ‘be’.
True joy lies not in the treasures found,
But in the moments where our souls are unbound.
We ask the stars, we question our pace,
What makes a heart feel embraced?
It’s the quiet peace of an honest smile,
Living our truths, mile by mile.
So pause, breathe in the here and now,
Find fulfillment in the why and how.
For happiness is a delicate dance,
In the stillness, we find life’s true expanse.
To Kick Off Your Week:
"Happiness is not something ready made. It comes from your own actions." — Dalai Lama
Focus on cultivating happiness from within this week, and remember that the best source of fulfillment often lies in the simplicity of the present moment.
Warm regards,
